Algeria will begin rehabilitating its national electricity monitoring and control system in 2026, Energy and Renewable Energy Minister Mourad Adjal announced on Thursday, October 30, according to the Algerian Press Service (APS). The decision followed a sectoral meeting held in Algiers.
The project focuses on upgrading the SCADA system operated by state-owned utility Sonelgaz, which oversees electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. The initiative aims to “further improve the public electricity service” across the country, Adjal said.
According to Algerian media reports, the rehabilitation will target the supervisory and remote-control system that monitors, manages, and regulates electricity flows through the national grid. The work will involve a technical overhaul of the existing system, modernization of communication equipment, and upgrades to the digital infrastructure used by regional control centers. Sonelgaz will supervise the project, as it already manages the country’s high-voltage transmission and distribution network.
The Energy Ministry said the project is designed to enhance the reliability of the national power grid and enable more efficient monitoring of installations. It noted that rising demand, grid expansion, and a more diversified generation mix make modernization essential.
The initiative is part of Algeria’s broader efforts to strengthen energy security and upgrade critical infrastructure. Recent government programs have focused on improving efficiency and reliability, including the National Program for the Development of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which targets 27% renewable energy in total electricity production by 2030 and aims to encourage grid integration of clean power sources.
