Air Burkina Expands Fleet in Push to Revive National Connectivity

Air Burkina took delivery of an Embraer 190 on October 30, 2025, at Ouagadougou International Airport, expanding its fleet to two aircraft. The national carrier said the new plane will strengthen its route network and improve passenger comfort and reliability.

The airline received its first Embraer 190 in September 2024, enabling it to resume operations on October 2 that year after a two-year shutdown. It currently serves domestic routes to Bobo-Dioulasso and regional destinations including Cotonou, Abidjan, Accra, Bamako, Niamey, and Lomé.

Before acquiring the new jets, Air Burkina had suspended operations due to management and liquidity problems that forced it to terminate the lease of two Embraer 195s it operated between 2018 and 2022.

The carrier’s revival is part of Burkina Faso’s broader strategy to develop its national air transport sector and improve connectivity for the landlocked country. Air Burkina is seen as a key element in that plan, aimed at restoring reliable regional links and supporting economic integration.

A second pillar of the government’s aviation roadmap is the construction of the new Donsin Airport, which will replace Ouagadougou-Taamsê Airport, built in the 1960s. The new facility is designed to handle at least one million passengers a year once completed.
