Algeria’s Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, working with the Algiers Municipality, is drafting a strategic plan to improve mobility and ease chronic traffic congestion in the capital.
The plan calls for major investments, extending the tramway and metro networks, completing the central train station and three additional rail stations, and launching new cable car lines.
It also envisions the construction of two new monorail lines covering a total of 67 kilometers.
The new systems are meant to supplement Algiers’ existing transport network, which includes 19 km of metro lines (serving about 46 million passengers annually), several cable car routes, and bus services operated by the state-owned ETUSA and private companies.
Transport options currently fall short for a city of more than 3 million residents, according to World Population data. Local media report that capacity constraints, especially in bus services, often lead to delays and overcrowding.
Officials say the new projects should help relieve pressure on the city’s transport system and improve links between residential neighborhoods, universities, and key service centers across the capital.
