• RAM to acquire up to 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets, several 787 Dreamliners, and around 20 Airbus A220s
• The plan supports the airline’s long-term strategy to grow its fleet from 50 to 200 aircraft by 2037
• New aircraft will serve expanding routes across Africa and the Americas amid rising tourism
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) is preparing to finalize major aircraft orders as part of its long-term expansion strategy developed with the Moroccan government. The goal is to scale the airline’s fleet from about 50 to 200 aircraft by 2037.
According to industrial sources cited by international media, RAM is in advanced negotiations to purchase up to 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets for short and medium-haul routes, along with several 787 Dreamliners for long-haul operations. The airline is also expected to confirm an order for about 20 Airbus A220s.
These acquisitions align with a government-backed program contract signed in July 2023. The deal aims to strengthen RAM’s competitiveness and expand its global route network, with a particular focus on Africa and the Americas.
The fleet expansion comes amid strong growth in Morocco’s air travel sector. The country recorded nearly 17.4 million tourist arrivals in 2024 and aims to reach 26 million annually by 2030. This ambition would place Morocco among the world’s top 15 tourist destinations. Tourism currently contributes nearly 7% of the country’s GDP.
In addition to growing the fleet, RAM seeks to match aircraft types to specific market needs, supporting tourism, diaspora travel, business mobility, and intra-African connections. The airline expects the new aircraft to enhance operational efficiency and support Morocco’s broader economic goals.
