The 2024-2025 literacy campaign in Côte d’Ivoire has delivered notable results, according to a national review presented Friday in Abidjan. Officials reported that more than 4,610 people gained basic literacy skills, 172 supervisors were trained and integrated, and 172 literacy infrastructures were built under the government’s Social Program.
The review also confirmed that the national strategy remains focused on reducing the illiteracy rate to 30% in the medium term, a key step toward improving equitable access to education and socio-economic opportunities.
Following the assessment, participants from four departments within the literacy and non-formal education sub-sector of the Ministry of National Education and Literacy outlined strategic directions for the 2025-2026 campaign.
Speaking at the meeting, Eloi Noël Kouassi, technical advisor to the minister, stressed that literacy and non-formal education remain essential pillars of Côte d’Ivoire’s human, social, and economic development. He highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring that every citizen acquires the skills needed to take part fully in the country’s economic, social, and cultural life.
Kouassi recalled recent progress, including strengthened training for literacy instructors, the rollout of more effective pedagogical programs, and the gradual integration of digital tools for learning and monitoring. He also noted that the opening of literacy centers within 11 regional directorates of national education has expanded access by bringing services closer to communities.
Officials emphasized that these initiatives support Côte d’Ivoire’s trajectory toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 on quality education and social inclusion.
