After more than 20 years of planning, construction and delays, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) officially opens near the Pyramids of Giza on 1 November 2025. This marks a major step in Egypt’s efforts to leverage its pharaonic heritage to boost tourism. The museum complex spans roughly 500,000 m² and houses around 100,000 artefacts, including Tutankhamun’s complete collection, a colossal 11-metre granite statue of Ramesses II relocated from downtown Cairo, and Khufu’s 42-metre solar boat transported via a remote-controlled vehicle.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a new official website for the Grand Egyptian Museum as part of its digital-outreach efforts to widen access and pre-visit engagement. The museum’s grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 1 November 2025, with streaming on platforms like TikTok for wider reach; full public access commences on 4 November 2025.
GEM’s design features a triangular glass façade echoing the pyramids, and the entrance atrium is connected to the Pyramids via a bridge allowing foot or electric-vehicle access. Officials expect up to 8 million visitors per year once fully operational, potentially helping raise total tourist arrivals from 15.7 million in 2024 toward the government’s goal of 30 million by 2030.
The museum forms a central part of a broader tourism strategy that includes upgraded roads, a metro station, and Sphinx International Airport about 40 minutes away. Tourism is vital to Egypt’s foreign-currency earnings and employment, with cultural tourists staying longer and spending more than resort visitors.
GEM is also one of several mega-projects championed by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who since taking office in 2014 has invested heavily in infrastructure to revive an economy weakened by decades of stagnation and the 2011 Arab Spring unrest.
