The Emerald Sea is a vast turquoise lagoon located in the northern part of Madagascar, just a few kilometers from the town of Antsiranana (formerly Diego Suarez). Protected by a coral reef, this marine expanse owes its name to the striking color of its waters, which shift from light green to deep blue depending on the sunlight. Nestled between the Diego Bay and the Indian Ocean, the Emerald Sea is one of the most breathtaking natural treasures in the region.
It is accessible by traditional wooden sailboats called boutres, departing from the village of Ramena. The crossing itself is a sensory immersion: the boats glide over crystal-clear water, passing over sandbanks and shallow areas where one can spot starfish, tropical fish, and sometimes even sea turtles. Upon arrival, the surroundings are almost untouched, with deserted beaches, white sand dunes, and intact coastal vegetation.
The Emerald Sea is renowned not only for its postcard-like beauty but also for its rich marine biodiversity. The coral reef that encircles the lagoon is home to a wide variety of species, making it a prime spot for snorkeling. Its relative isolation and the challenging access by land have helped preserve the exceptional natural environment, which remains largely off the beaten tourist track.
It is also a favorite location for kitesurfers and windsurfers, especially from June to October when the trade winds blow steadily. However, the fragile beauty of the Emerald Sea demands a respectful approach: visitors are encouraged to minimize their ecological footprint and to leave no trace behind.
Ultimately, the Emerald Sea is more than just a stunning landscape — it is a fragile ecosystem, a sanctuary of unspoiled nature, and a living testament to the splendor of Madagascar’s coastal heritage. It offers a truly immersive experience, blending peaceful contemplation, marine exploration, and a deep connection with a preserved natural environment.
