Egypt and Sweden signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, to expand their partnership in health and medicine, according to an Egyptian government statement.
The objective is to strengthen bilateral cooperation in public health, primary care, and maternal and child health, and to develop public health control centers. The agreement will also promote knowledge exchange, collaboration between specialized medical centers and research institutes, and the adoption of modern health technologies.
"This protocol reflects the commitment of the Egyptian state to building international partnerships in the health sector and benefiting from advanced expertise, which contributes to the development of the healthcare system and the strengthening of the health system's capacity to meet current and future health challenges," said Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Egyptian Minister of Health and Population.
The Egyptian health system has recorded significant progress, allowing it to overcome numerous challenges and respond to them with efficiency and speed, according to the government. However, the sector continues to face many difficulties, such as high investment costs, the migration of qualified doctors and auxiliary staff, and health disparities.
The government has implemented several reforms and initiatives to improve the sector. These include funding of 115 billion Egyptian pounds ($2.4 billion) for the second phase of the Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS). It aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of services, ensuring access to quality medical care for the entire population. Relations between Egypt and Sweden have gradually deepened over the years, with increased exchanges and diplomatic meetings to strengthen bilateral cooperation. This new phase is focused on strengthening health infrastructure, modernizing facilities, and integrating digital solutions.
