Burkina Faso to get $250 mln from Global Fund for disease response

  • Burkina Faso will receive $250 million from the Global Fund for 2024-2026.
  • The money will boost the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
  • Attacks have crippled 20% of health facilities, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Burkina Faso will receive $250 million in funding from the Global Fund as part of the 2024-2026 partnership cycle.

The announcement was made yesterday in Ouagadougou by Maria Kirova, the Fund’s country representative, during a meeting with Minister of Economy and Finance Dr Aboubakar Nacanabo. The funds will be used to strengthen the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

During the meeting, Kirova called for greater domestic resource mobilization in support of the health sector.

According to the World Bank, terrorist attacks have shut down 413 health facilities, or 20% of the total, leaving 3.8 million people without access to care and deepening the humanitarian crisis. The strain on the health system is especially visible in the fight against malaria, which accounts for 43% of consultations, more than 60% of hospital admissions, and 30% of deaths. The World Health Organization reported 8.1 million cases and over 16,000 deaths from malaria in 2023.

To address the situation, the government launched in June 2025 a free distribution campaign of 15 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets, covering more than 30 million people.

Burkina Faso allocates 12% of its national budget to health and nearly 40% to social investments, including health and education, according to the Ministry of Finance.
