New AI Unit created to coordinate national AI strategy and projects
Structure will implement the Digital Transformation Blueprint 2025–2029
Centralized governance aims to boost efficiency, public service automation, and responsible AI
The Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation (MITCI) has announced the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Unit, a structure dedicated to coordinating, developing, and deploying artificial intelligence technologies at the national level.
Reporting directly to the MITCI, the AI Unit will oversee the implementation of the Digital Transformation Blueprint 2025–2029 and provide a unified vision for all AI-related initiatives. It will harmonize projects, prevent fragmentation, and ensure a coherent approach across government agencies, technology companies, and research institutions.
Its responsibilities include defining an ethical AI framework, preparing appropriate regulation, training public sector managers, expanding intelligent automation across public services, and developing research partnerships with universities and the local tech ecosystem.
A context shaped by rising digital adoption
The creation of the AI Unit formalizes momentum built in recent years and provides a more structured governance model. Mauritius is among the most connected countries in Africa, with Internet penetration above 80% and increasing use of online services in both government and business.
According to the 2024 AI Readiness Index, which measures governments’ capacity to use AI based on governance, technological infrastructure, and data quality, Mauritius scores 53.94 and ranks 69th worldwide. The ranking reflects an improving ecosystem that still requires stronger institutional mechanisms to progress further.
By centralizing AI governance, the new unit is expected to improve efficiency and coherence. It could accelerate public service automation, enhance citizen experience, and reduce administrative delays. It should also help ensure responsible and inclusive AI development by strengthening compliance with international standards, data protection, and system reliability.
