Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Algeria on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, and signed multiple agreements with Algerian officials. The agreements aim to expand bilateral cooperation across education, agriculture, energy, and diplomacy, marking a new phase in south-south partnership.
The countries signed a memorandum of understanding for higher education and an executive program covering 2026–2029. Algeria will host 110 Somali students starting in the 2025–2026 academic year as part of an expanded scholarship program that includes university, professional, security, and defense training.
Additional agreements cover agriculture, fishing, animal health, oil, gas, and mining sectors. The countries also signed a reciprocal diplomatic visa exemption, signaling their intention to strengthen political, economic, and academic cooperation.
Relations between Somalia and Algeria, rooted in African and Arab solidarity, have strengthened in recent years. Both countries, members of the African Union and Arab League, share a commitment to south-south cooperation and mutual support.
In 2025, Mogadishu and Algiers created a joint government committee, a political consultation mechanism, and enhanced cooperation on diplomatic training. Somalia also opened a new embassy in Algiers.
The countries agreed to establish a joint ministerial commission to monitor the implementation of agreements and identify new areas for cooperation.
