Stellantis will build an Opel vehicle plant in Algeria
The site will complement Opel’s European manufacturing network
Opel becomes Stellantis’ second brand produced locally after Fiat
Stellantis announced on yesterday it will set up a production plant for its German brand Opel in Algeria, where the group already operates a factory producing vehicles under the Italian brand Fiat.
“Opel has chosen Algeria for its new production site outside Europe,” said Opel Automotive GmbH Chief Executive Officer Florian Huettl in a post on professional networking platform LinkedIn.
“Algeria has been a region of particular interest to us for the past two years. The steady deepening of our partnerships has now led us to a clear new step: a dedicated production unit in Algeria, designed to serve Algerian customers and complement Opel’s well-established European manufacturing network,” he added, referring to a recent working meeting with Algerian officials.
The head of the German brand also said that “local production, industrial integration, and long-term investment are key drivers of sustainable growth, both for customers and partners and for the Algerian industry.”
For his part, Stellantis Chief Operating Officer for the Africa and Middle East region Samir Cherfan said the decision to install an Opel vehicle plant “builds on the successful launch of the brand in the country more than two years ago,” adding that the industrial site “will make it possible to better serve Algerian customers as well as the wider Middle East and Africa region.”
Formed in 2021 from the merger of France’s PSA (Peugeot-Citroën) and Italian-American group Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Stellantis has 14 brands, including Fiat, Opel, Peugeot, Citroën, Alfa Romeo, and Dodge.
Opel will become the second Stellantis brand to establish production in Algeria after Fiat, whose plant in Oran began operations in December 2023.
In addition to Fiat and Opel, Stellantis announced last May, through Samir Cherfan, that it is also considering assembling vehicles under the Italian brand Alfa Romeo in Algeria.
Outside Algeria, Stellantis operates assembly plants in Morocco and Egypt and has a project underway in South Africa. When announcing an expansion of its Moroccan factory in November 2022, the group said it was targeting a 22% market share in the Africa and Middle East region by 2030.
