  • Funds support free education programs, infrastructure, materials, and teacher housing
  • Additional $901M set for GETFund to boost nationwide education infrastructure

Ghana has allocated 33.3 billion cedis ($3.03 billion) to the Ministry of Education in its 2026 budget. According to the government’s budget presentation on Thursday, the amount is up from an estimated 28.3 billion cedis in 2025.

The funds will support major education programmes, including Free Secondary Education, the Ghana Secondary Learning Improvement Programme, the national school feeding programme, and free tertiary education for persons with disabilities.

Spending will also cover infrastructure and learning materials, such as textbooks, furniture, vehicles, new school buildings, teacher housing and sanitation facilities.

The government launched several reforms in 2025 aimed at improving access to and the quality of education. In July, Ghana and Israel agreed to introduce Israeli EdTech tools to support the sector’s digital transformation.

In addition to the ministry’s allocation, the government has set aside 9.9 billion cedis for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), which finances education infrastructure and equipment nationwide.
