Togo’s GDP per capita surpasses $1,300 in 2025, supported by economic growth above 6%.
The United Nations revises population data downward by about 12% following the 2022 census.
The demographic adjustment mechanically lifts GDP per capita, which rises from $1,206.93 in 2023 to $1,281.04 in 2024.
Togo’s GDP per capita crosses the $1,300 threshold in 2025. Both stronger economic activity and the recent demographic revision by the United Nations explain this evolution.
In January 2026, the United Nations Population Division published an interim update of Togo’s demographic estimates based on the detailed results of the 2022 general census. The revision corrects a gap of around 12% compared with previous estimates and adjusts the population to a slightly lower level for 2022 and 2023.
Population figures directly enter the calculation of GDP per capita. Analysts obtain this ratio by dividing annual national output by the total number of inhabitants. When authorities revise the demographic base downward and keep output constant, the indicator rises mechanically.
Based on the new estimates, GDP per capita stands at $1,206.93 in 2023 and increases to $1,281.04 in 2024. In 2025, sustained economic growth estimated at above 6%, combined with a gradual slowdown in demographic growth, allows the ratio to exceed $1,300. The natural population growth rate declines from 2.36% in 2024 to 2.34% in 2025, which further supports the increase.
A Benchmark Indicator
GDP per capita remains one of the most widely used indicators to measure average wealth levels and compare economic performance across countries. International financial institutions, rating agencies and technical partners incorporate this metric into their assessments.
The crossing of the $1,300 threshold therefore reflects a dual dynamic. On one hand, the country improves national output. On the other hand, statistical authorities refine the demographic base that underpins macroeconomic indicators.
