  • $40 million solar project to power 209 schools and hospitals in Eastern Zambia
  • Initiative part of President Hichilema’s clean energy strategy for underserved areas
  • Project supports 2030 goal of 10,000 MW solar capacity and wider energy access

Zambia has launched a $40 million solar energy project to install 50 megawatts of solar power across 209 public institutions, including schools and hospitals, in the Eastern Province. The project is a joint effort between the Zambian Ministry of Energy, local company Accura Logistics, and international investor Baker Global Capital Africa.

The initiative forms part of President Hakainde Hichilema’s broader strategy to improve access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy, particularly in underserved communities. It follows a severe drought in 2024 that tested Zambia’s power grid, which remains heavily reliant on hydroelectric sources.

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote  explained that the solar installations will benefit crucial public institutions, including schools and hospitals, thus improving service delivery and the quality of life for communities in the Eastern Province. He noted that Zambia aims to add 1,000 megawatts of solar capacity to the national grid by the end of 2025.

Frequent blackouts and dependence on hydropower have made Zambia vulnerable to climate fluctuations. To address this, the government is expanding its renewable energy portfolio to diversify its power supply, reduce regional inequalities in electricity access, and attract foreign investment in clean energy.

By focusing on essential public infrastructure, the project aims to enhance energy security and service continuity in critical sectors. According to the World Bank, only 50% of Zambia's population had access to electricity in 2025. The country targets a total solar generation capacity of 10,000 megawatts by 2030.
