Ghana and Japan signed an exchange of notes on Monday, February 23, formalizing a $20 million grant for the “Project for the Improvement of the Health System in the Northern Region.”
The funding is intended to strengthen health infrastructure and improve access to quality care, particularly for underserved communities in the region.
Access to affordable, quality health services remains a priority for the Ghanaian administration, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said. Despite notable progress, including the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Ghana’s health sector continues to face disparities between urban and rural areas, as well as shortages of medical personnel and equipment.
Diplomatic relations between Ghana and Japan date back to 1957 and span multiple sectors, including health, infrastructure, education and the economy.
According to the foreign minister, the project aligns with Ghana’s broader objective of reducing regional health disparities and advancing universal health coverage.
