  • Project upgrades 77 km road to boost trade, regional connectivity

  • Initiative aims to create jobs and support economic growth

Cameroon and the Saudi Fund for Development signed a $75 million financing agreement on Monday to upgrade a highway in the country's north.

The deal covers the construction of a dual-carriageway road stretching 77 kilometers along the Sorawel-Guider-Mayo Oulo-Dourbeye corridor, improving road safety and transport efficiency, the Fund said on X.

The project aims to strengthen national and cross-border connectivity through the modernization of road infrastructure.

"By facilitating trade both domestically and with neighboring countries, notably Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic, it will help strengthen regional integration and support economic growth," Cameroon's minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development said.

The project is expected to create jobs, particularly for young people and women, while contributing to poverty reduction in the affected areas.

The Sorawel-Guider-Mayo Oulo-Dourbeye rehabilitation project was identified by the Saudi Fund for Development in 2023 and included in Cameroon's 2023-2025 medium-term expenditure framework.

The Saudi Fund for Development finances numerous projects in Cameroon across key sectors including road infrastructure, education, health and agriculture. The latest agreement brings the Fund's total financing commitments in Cameroon to $136 million, according to the Ministry of Economy.
