Togo has secured CFA400 million in funding from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support assistance for refugees in the country. The program is being implemented by the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC). A symbolic handover ceremony for the funding was held on January 26.
The program mainly targets the Savanes and Kara regions, where displaced populations are concentrated. The resources will be used to purchase food and non-food items, as well as to build basic social infrastructure, including boreholes and latrines.
Beyond humanitarian assistance, the project’s implementation involves local suppliers and service providers, generating short-term economic activity in areas already weakened by security shocks. According to the ANPC, the initiative is also intended to ease the burden on host families, which have been under sustained pressure since the arrival of refugees.
“This project strengthens the capacity of host families and helps relieve them, in support of government action, notably through food assistance and the construction of social facilities,” said Yaya Seyda, director of emergency operations planning.
Initially scheduled to end in December 2025, the program has been extended until the end of March 2026 to address operational constraints. The targeted beneficiaries fall under the protection framework of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
