  • Kenya and the Czech Republic signed a defense cooperation agreement in Nairobi.

  • The deal covers military training, peacekeeping, intelligence, and cybersecurity.

  • Bilateral trade reached $30.8m in 2024, according to ITC data.

Kenya and the Czech Republic signed a defense cooperation agreement on January 28 in Nairobi, marking a new step in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Kenya’s defense minister, Soipan Tuya, said the two sides are ready to begin implementing the cooperation and development agreement once it is ratified. She said the process will be guided by mutual trust and a shared commitment to regional and international peace and security.

The agreement provides for enhanced cooperation in military education and training, peacekeeping operations, intelligence sharing, maritime security, and cybersecurity. It also covers humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

The signing follows discussions that began in 2019. On the economic front, trade between Kenya and the Czech Republic totaled $30.8 million in 2024, according to data from the International Trade Center.

Through the agreement, the Czech Republic is strengthening its presence in a strategic region linked to major maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

The Global Firepower Index 2025 ranks Kenya 83rd globally in terms of military strength, while the Czech Republic is ranked 55th out of 145 countries assessed.
