Coffee: Uganda Doubles Export Earnings to $2.2 Billion in 2024/2025

  • Uganda’s coffee export earnings reached $2.2 billion in 2024/2025, doubling from $1.14 billion the previous year.
  • Coffee export volumes grew by 25%, with 7.7 million bags (462,000 tonnes) shipped internationally.
  • Europe accounts for 69% of Uganda’s coffee exports, led by Italy and Germany, followed by Asia (14%) and Africa (12%).

Uganda, Africa’s second-largest coffee producer after Ethiopia, set a new export record in the 2024/2025 financial year. The Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) reported that international coffee shipments generated $2.2 billion, twice the $1.14 billion earned the previous year.

This surge in revenue owes much to higher export volumes. The Ugandan industry shipped 7.7 million bags of coffee, equivalent to 462,000 tonnes, marking a 25% increase from 367,800 tonnes shipped a year earlier.

The jump in exports also reflects increased production. Uganda produces about 85% Robusta coffee and 15% Arabica. Both saw strong price rises between July 2024 and April 2025. Robusta prices climbed 33%, from $4.09/kg to $5.42/kg in London. Arabica prices nearly doubled, rising 80% from $6.37/kg to $11.42/kg in New York.

Europe remains the dominant export market, absorbing 69% of Uganda’s coffee exports. Italy and Germany lead demand, followed by Asia, which accounts for 14%, and Africa with 12%.
