Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame field is expected to provide its first oil in August 2017 and first gas in 2018, the acting CEO of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) revealed.
The project is estimated provide extra 30,000 bopd when it commences operation, thereby increasing outputs from the Jubilee and the Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme (TEN) fields to more than 120,000 bpd. Sankofa-Gye Nyame is to also produce 180 million scf/d of gas, which is enough to generate about 1,100 megawatts of electricity.
“Sankofa is a game-changer in the development of Ghana’s gas industry. GNPC, state institutions and the World Bank have been particularly effective in efforts to finalize the commercial and contractual arrangements for the project. We are pleased to have made significant progress in just one year, but there is much more to do. We will continue to collaborate with these institutions, and in addition provide access to use of project equipment, machinery and vehicles to ensure successful delivery of the project,” Alex Mould (photo) told Business and Financial Times.
He added that Investments in the building of gas export pipelines to be integrated with the Ghana Gas pipelines, together with onshore receiving facilities, are needed to guarantee effective supply of fuel to develop Ghana’s energy capacity. “This will help provide electricity to households, schools, hospitals and businesses, and fuel Ghana’s economic development” he said.
GNPC together with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Petroleum and the Bank of Ghana, procuring the project which is worth US$7.9billion.the project is the biggest foreign direct investment into Ghana. Working alongside private partners such as ENI and Vitol and the World Bank, GNPC is assured of delivering the Sankofa-Gye Nyame project on schedule and on budget.
