Kosmos Energy has made a noteworthy gas find at the Marsouin-1 exploration well, in the northern portion of Block C-8, offshore Mauritania.
The Marsouin-1 well is situated about 60 km north of the basin-opening Ahmeyim-1. The well was drilled with the Atwood Achiever drillship in nearly 2,400 metre of water. It came across around 70 metres of net gas pay in the Upper and Lower Cenomanian intervals which include excellent quality reservoir sands.
According to Kosmos, the Marsouin-1 is the second major gas discovery of the year increasing its 100% success rate in the outboard Cretaceous petroleum system offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
“Well-to-seismic calibration has significantly de-risked the discovered resource base, as well as future prospects in the basin. Importantly, the well results have validated our charge model and given us growing confidence in our ability to predict the oil and gas potential of this emerging, large-scale petroleum system. We have a disciplined exploration and appraisal program planned to further unlock the basin”, Andrew Inglis, the chairman and CEO of Kosmos said.
The Atwood Achiever drillship is to head to the southern part of Mauritania’s Block C-8 where the Ahmeyim-2 is situated. There it will drill the top-hole section of the well. The drillship will then sail to Senegal to drill the Guembeul-1 well. The Guembeul-1 well is the first in many wells to demarcate the Greater Tortue area before the end of 2015, World Oil News.
