Nexans on Monday announced that it has been granted a contract to supply cabling to Samsung Heavy Industries’, turnkey contractor.
Nexans said the contract was granted to Samsung Heavy Industries by Total for the latter’s Egina floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit situated offshore Nigeria. The contract which is worth $3.1billion, is the biggest FPSO contract so far.
This project includes over 2,200 km of power, equipment and control in order to service the FPSO platform. The Egina oil field is situated 130 km off the coast of Nigeria at water depths of 1,750m.
According to Nexans, the cables were specifically intended to avoid gas leakages, thereby making them the best options for flammable or high-risk environments. This signifies that the project is capable of conforming to local fire safety regulations and meeting the stringent technical terms for the International Electro technical Commission (IEC) standards and Bureau Veritas certificate.
Total is the operator of the FPSO. The vessel which is 330m in length, 61m across and 34m high, with a storage capacity of 2.3 million BO will be on stream from 2017. Samsung Heavy Industries is to provide the FPSO via a turnkey contract that contains design, procurement, building, transportation and pilot operation.
“Nexans is incredibly proud to have been selected as cables supplier for this ambitious project. The contract with SHI is our largest FPSO contract to date, highlighting our expertise in the oil and gas industry,” Benjamin Fitoussi, Executive Vice President Middle East, Russia & Africa responsible for global Oil & Gas activities at Nexans told Offshore Energy Today.
