Ethiopia generated $35.06 million from energy exports during the first half of the current fiscal year which began in July 2017.
Bizuneh Tolcha, Director of Public Relations and Communications Directorate at the Ethiopian Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, told Xinhua that the revenues were generated by exporting 100MW to Sudan, 70MW to Djibouti and 10MW to Kenya.
This represents 81% of the government’s initial target ($43.3 million from energy exports) during the period under review.
"Ethiopia's energy exports are part of a broader plan to economically integrate the East African region including through electricity," the authority said.
In the framework of this plan, the construction of a 1,045 km line with a 2,000 MW transmission capacity is underway to link the country’s grid to that of Kenya.
