The Congolese government has decided to dismiss the national electricity and water companies. “These two companies were characterized by a near-bankruptcy technical situation, had it not been for the government subsidies. Their poor performance in distribution and commercialization has had the impact of deteriorating relations with their respective customers and users, to the point of making them execrable,” said Serge Blaise Zoniaba, the minister of energy and water.
The reform of those two sectors will be conducted under the supervision of an interdepartmental committee. Furthermore, they will be replaced by three new entities namely the electricity assets company, Electricity Transmission Company, and water assets company.
These companies will become limited companies to achieve greater efficiency and facilitate the mobilization of private investment on the capital markets.
Currently, the country has an electric power of 650 MW, for an electrification rate of 43%. It intends to improve its electrification rate while increasing its power output to 1, 500 MW, thanks to several projects.
