Hundreds of Nigerians have taken to the streets of Lagos to call for a change of government over the state of the economy.
“Unemployed people are hungry and angry. Government of the rich, for the rich, making rules for the poor,” the protesters chanted.
In response to the protest, the Acting President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande has said: “We hear you loud and clear.”
Nigeria is in its first recession in 25 years. The economy contracted by 2.1% while inflation had increased to 17.1%.
the country’s economy which relies greatly on oil revenues slumped into recession in 2016 due to a plunge in oil prices paired with a low crude output caused by the insurgency in the Niger Delta region. As a result, businesses and the cost of living in the country were negatively affected.
