Egypt and Turkey appoint new ambassadors to bolster their diplomatic relations

Relations between Egypt and Turkey have been improving since 2021, reflecting better diplomatic ties. To sustain and bolster the dynamic, Turkish and Egyptian authorities appointed new ambassadors.

After several years of political and diplomatic tensions, Egypt and Turkey decided to bolster their diplomatic relations by appointing ambassadors. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs released this information on Tuesday, July 4.

Ankara appointed Mr. Salih Mutlu Sen as the new ambassador to Egypt, while Cairo named Amr El Hamamy as its ambassador to Turkey.

The joint decision comes after a decade of strained relations between the two countries, following the rise to power of General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who toppled the Morsi regime. Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s former leader, was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization supported by Turkey.

The persecution of this movement by the Egyptian military regime led to a freeze in relations between the two countries. In November 2013, both countries expelled their respective ambassadors. However, since 2021, Turkey was trying to "bury the hatchet."

"This step aims to restore normal relations between the two countries. It also demonstrates their mutual determination to bolster bilateral ties in the best interest of the Turkish and Egyptian people," the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said.
