The President appointed a new foreign minister following the dismissal of Aurélien Agbénonci.
Beninese President Patrice Talon has appointed Shegun Adjadi Bakari as the new Foreign Minister, the presidency announced on June 6.
The new Foreign Minister was appointed in the place of Aurélien Agbénonci who was dismissed last month. According to local media, the government hasn’t given any explanation as to why Agbénonci was removed. He had held the position since President Talon was first elected in 2016.
Bakari, on the other hand, was the Minister Advisor for Investments of Benin since April 2022, before his recent appointment. He also served as an advisor within the government of President Faure Gnassingbé in Togo until 2021.
Bakari was appointed a few days after President Talon met with his ambassadors and diplomatic mission officers, on May 30.
