The Angolan government plans to set a food reserve before the year 2019. The information was disclosed by Joffre Van-Dúnem Júnior (photo), the trade minister who stressed that the decision has already been approved by the economic committee of the council of ministers.
According to him, this stock will enable the government to intervene in the domestic market to keep prices in balance and supply populations in case of crisis, deficit or natural disaster.
Products selected to constitute this food reserve include wheat flour (10, 000 tons), maize flour (10, 000 tons), beans (15, 000 tons) and rice (20, 000 tons). The official explained that out of these products, only rice supply will depend on imports.
Angola is one of Africa's largest food importers with a record level of $4 billion in 2015, according to AfDB. Let’s recall that agriculture accounts for 13% of the country’s GDP.
