Tunisian tourism revenues reached TND1.64 billion (around $526 million) during the first four months of 2024, marking an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to data published on May 7 by the country's central bank.
This increase is primarily attributed to a rise in the number of tourists, in a context marked by a significant improvement in the security situation in the country, the central bank noted. Furthermore, the central bank indicated that remittances reached TND2.39 billion ($762 million) between January 1 and April 30 of the current year, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period last year. These transfers constitute the second-largest source of foreign currency after export revenues.
In Tunisia, remittances have surpassed tourism revenues and foreign direct investment flows since the 2011 Revolution, which led to a decline in tourist arrivals and a decrease in the country's attractiveness to foreign investors.
