The United Nations said it is seeking further $900 million this year to resolve crisis in Somalia where more than 6 million people, including about 275,000 malnourished children, need humanitarian aid. This was revealed on May 11 by UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.
“This morning, we presented the revised humanitarian response plan seeking an additional $900 million the end of the year,” said Guterres on the sidelines of an international conference on Somalia organized by U.K’s Prime Minister, Theresa May.
May made a long-term commitment to reinforce Somali security forces and insure that assistance is rapidly provided to the country.
Somalia faces its worst drought in decades and some of the most affected areas are controlled by Islamic terrorist group al-Shabaab.
In 2011, more than 250,000 died of hunger in the country huch is situated in the Horn of Africa.
