In Nigeria, the World Bank has said that it is ready to work together with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), to carry out projects that would make the environment in the state cleaner and healthier.
The leader of the World Bank team, Joseph Akpokodje, disclosed this during a recent official visit to LAWMA. He said the aim of the visit was to brainstorm ways to combat some of the environmental challenges being faced in the state, particularly waste management and air pollution. “We are here talking to you because you manage waste in Lagos. Methane is a greenhouse gas that we want to address as part of the programme.”
Akpokodje added that the financial institution also looks to commence the South-south cooperation which involves Nigeria partnering with other concerned countries on ways to reduce prevalent environmental challenges.
It should be recalled that the Lagos state government in February announced plans to introduce a new law which would bar the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) from direct involvement in waste collection and recycling activities.
