Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari (pictured) is committed to preserving his country’s food security through the fight against growing banditry. In a statement relayed last May 13, the President announced strong action to put an end to the criminal acts that are rampant in Nigeria.
Such a measure will ensure that people work safely in farms. Buhari said he “will use all available resources and manpower in dealing with bandits to ensure that they do not create havoc against access to farms and food production in the coming growing season.”
As a reminder, Nigeria, which has been facing the terrorist threat of Boko Haram since 2009, is currently facing a series of kidnappings and killings, and also the rise of tensions between several communities. These different situations, as well as restrictive measures concerning food imports, have led to a rise in food prices, with inflation expected to reach 18.2% in March 2021.
For an effective return to security and peace, the president had already undertaken the deployment of armed forces in the state of Zamfara and the creation of a control center for small arms in the country.
