World Bank announces suspension of $300 million support to Tanzania over pregnant students

Friday, 16 November 2018 18:58

World Bank suspended a $300 billion support to Tanzania, Reuters revealed on November 16, 2018, citing official sources.

According to information reported by the American media, this decision is consecutive to the country’s relaunch of a measure aimed at preventing schooling girls from attending school once they get pregnant. Standing against this measure, World Bank decided to suspend the presentation of a new education program to its administrative board.

This suspension occurs days after Tanzania issued a law aimed at having a grip over the compilation of official figures to which World Bank was against.

Recently, the backer has multiplied calls for human rights promotion in a country where, every year, about 8,000 girls are expelled from the educational system for pregnancy, according to figures reported byThe Guardian. Since 2015 when the new president John Magufuli (photo) assumed office, this practice in existence since 1961 has been intensified.

"Working with our partners, the World Bank will continue to advocate girls’ access to education through our dialogue with the Tanzanian government”, the institution indicated in a statement quoted by Reuters.

Let’s note that this announcement was made the same day Denmark suspended a $10 million support to the East African country due to human rights violations and "unacceptable homophobic comments".
