Wednesday, 18 April 2018 18:21

(Ecofin Agency) - Algeria plans to boost its power capacity to 25, 000 MW by 2025, with 2,000 MW from solar plants. This was announced by the energy minister Mustapha Guitouni (photo).

In order to achieve this goal, the country intends to build about 1,500 MW of power plants each year. “Power stations generating 1,500 MW will be built each year with equipment, including gas turbines manufactured in Algeria at Batna plant,” the official said.

According to him, once the national electricity needs are met, the country will export the energy surplus. He indicated that electricity exports would go first to Tunisia and Libya. With regard to internal energy consumption, it can reach a peak of 15,000 MW in the warmest months, and  8,000 MW on average during the other periods of the year.
