Nigeria: Buhari asks for another medical leave

Thursday, 19 January 2017 13:33

President Muhammadu Buhari (photo) has again written to the National Assembly, informing the lawmakers of his 10-day leave and temporary handover of power to Vice-president, Yemi Osinbajo.

According to Buhari, he was writing in line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended and the 10-day leave will take place from January 23 to February 6, 2017.

In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended, I wish to inform the Distinguished Senate that I will be away on a short medical vacation from Monday, January, 23 to February 6th, 2017 and while I am away, the Vice President (Osinbajo) will perform the functions of my office. Please, accept, as always assurances of my highest esteemed consideration,” the letter reads.

This is the third time the president will be transferring power to the Vice-president to act on his behalf as president, since he came into office in May 2015, Leadership news reports. The first time was in February 2016 when the President embarked on a five-day vacation and the second time was in June 2016 when he went on a trip to the United Kingdom for medical treatment for ear infection.
