World Bank will grant up to $80 million to support Mozambique’s project for irrigation and market access for farmers (Irriga) which will be implemented in the country’s Northern side as from July this year, Macauhub reports.
The financial resource will be disbursed over six years and the project which is set to reach 14, 000 farmers will cover 7, 000 hectares.
“With the development of irrigation , producers cease to depend solely on the rainy season to produce. With climate change, it is important to stimulate production during all seasons of the year,” Aniceto Bila, WB’s representative said.
Let’s recall that in Mozambique, irrigated lands account for only 3% of the arable lands (36 million ha). Agriculture is people’s main source of livelihood and accounts for 25% of the country's GDP.
