The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported yesterday June 19 that about 85% of refugees all around the world live in developing countries. Information relayed by Ethiopian Fana Broadcasting showed that wealthy countries are much less affected by refugee influxes, contrary to the traditionally received ideas.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said the crisis remains a problem that affects the “poor world” much more than the rich one. In addition, the UN agency reports that in 2017, the number of refugees worldwide reached a record 69 million. This growing number has reportedly been driven mainly by crises in Southern Sudan and Congo.
Let’s remind that out of this total, nearly 16.2 million new people were displaced last year, an average of over 44,000 people per day.
