Algeria cancels plan to reopen land borders

Algeria cancels plan to reopen land borders
Friday, 21 May 2021 12:41

Algeria decided in March 2020, due to Covid-19, to close all its borders. In a move to return to "normal", the government, later on, announced on May 16 the gradual reopening of land and air borders.

Algeria’s Presidency said on May 18 that the plan to reopen land borders will not be executed. In the related statement, authorities said the land borders will remain "closed unless necessary," but the plan to partially resume international flights is maintained.

Therefore, from Tuesday, June 1, 2021, the country will operate an average of 5 commercial flights per day to and from the airports of Algiers, Oran, and Constantine.

Since March 17, 2020, Algeria had announced the strict closure of land and air borders, allowing only the movement of goods in cargo flights. On May 16, 2021, the government said borders will gradually reopen but the restrictive measures should be strictly respected. Travelers are required to present a negative Covid-19 test dating less than 36 hours before departure; they will be quarantined if necessary.

Let’s note that the Presidency has indicated that the measures concerning border reopening would be "defined by an executive decree".

Algeria has recorded as of May 19, 203 new cases of Covid-19 and 7 new deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 125,896 with 3,395 deaths.
