In Mauritius, the tourism industry recorded more arrivals in 2016 than in 2015. Last year, the country received 1.28 million tourists, against 1.15 million the year before that (+11%). The surge was mainly spurred by a massive wave of European tourists (734,506) arriving in the country. This represents two-thirds of visiting tourists in 2016.
Tourism being one of the lungs of Mauritius’ economy, it generates substantial amounts of foreign currencies. Indeed, the sector generated over the past year nearly $1.4 billion.
The statistics office of the nation forecast a 4.3% increase in the number of tourist arrivals this year, reaching 1.3 million. Expected revenues amount to about $1.6 billion.
