Over the next three years, the World Bank will provide Madagascar $1.3 billion to boost power supply and improve nutrition in the country. The commitment was confirmed by Makhtar Diop, World Bank’s vice-president for Africa, while he visited the nation.
“The World Bank will work with the government on two major axes: human development and access to power. The project will focus on improving the country’s nutrition indicators and provide power to as much of its people as possible,” said the official.
Madagascar has an electrification rate of 14% and faces serious nutrition-related challenges as one out of two of the children in the country suffer from malnutrition-spurred stunting. With a hydroelectric potential of 7,000 MW, it aims to achieve a power production of 5,000 MW by 2030.
