Facebook, in partnership with Vodafone, launched the Express Wi-fi, a wireless broadband internet access point, program in Ghana to offer quality internet access to the population not covered by the backbone network. The Express Wi-Fi is launched in Ghana a year after it was launched in Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania.
In the framework of that initiative, Vodafone Ghana has already rolled out Wi-fi access points in Nima, James Town, Maamobi, Pig Farm and Abossey Okai in Accra. During the launch of this service on February 1, 2019, Yolanda Cuba (photo), the managing director of Vodafone Ghana, indicated that the Express Wi-fi , which is a demonstration of the telecom firm’s strategy to provide quality internet to most of the population, will contribute to the country’s digital transformation much desired by the government.
For Facebook, Express Wi-fi is an opportunity to boost its presence in Africa, in compliance with its ambition to connect 1.5 billion additional people in the world. By extending its presence in Africa, the American firm also ensures a broader distribution of its Free Basics services.
