Econet Wireless revealed the first phase of its plan for digital transformation in Harare, Zimbabwe. According to the mobile telephony operator, this phase should start by the renovation 2.0 of First Street, one of the main commercial thoroughfares in the town.
Econet Wireless plans for the installation of a touch screen stall to let the municipal council and Zimbabweans exchange information on various social issues. Users can, for instance, submit complaints for improvement of public services.
The operator also plans for the creation of digital kiosks thanks to which users can pay their bills without visiting public administrations. Public lighting will be restored for better security of users and trades.
Numerous digital realizations are also planned such as the installation of public wi-fi.
Harare digital transformation falls within the framework of Econet Wireless’ ambition to transform it into a smart city.
For First Street’s renovation, an agreement was signed some days ago between the telecom company and the town’s municipal council. According to Lovemore Nyatsinea, executive assistant of Econet Wireless’ CEO, the works would be realized in many steps in strong partnership with many of the town’s institutions.
