(Ecofin Agency) - The mobile telephony operator Safaricom announced on November 6, 2018, the launch of M-Pesa Global, to boost its mobile money service M-Pesa’s presence on the international market.
Thanks to this service, money can directly be sent from anywhere around the world to M-Pesa clients in Kenya. In the same vein, M-Pesa clients can send money to people in the world in different ways including but not limited to recipients’ bank accounts or western union transfers.
Sitoyo Lopokoiyit (photo), head of Safaricom financial services explains that "This new service brings the convenience, safety, and speed of M-Pesa to the rest of the world and will enable Kenyans to send and receive money across the world from the comfort of their mobile phones". To materialize this international launch, Safaricom partnered with various partners like Paypal, with its service Paypal Mobile money, WorldRemit, and HomeSend.
Already present in the national fund transfer and mobile money service market, Safaricom’s launch of this international service augurs a strengthening of its financial performances in this market segment which actually makes 30% of Safaricom’s revenues (Ksh35.52 billion or 347,567,376 US dollar).
