Wim Vanhellepute (photo), CEO of MTN Uganda, was deported from Uganda on February 14, 2019. In a release signed by Ugandan minister of internal affairs Gen Jeje Odongo, the CEO is ousted from the country for an indefinite period. He is thus the fourth MTN manager to be driven out of the country by the current government.
Last January, three other managers were expelled from the country for subversive activities. They are namely Français Olivier Prentout, marketing manager, Annie Bilenge Tabura, sales manager, and Elsa Mussolini, manager of the mobile money.
Wim Vanhellepute was expelled following an audition with the military intelligence on the charges brought against his colleagues. Days after this audition (Feb 12), Anthony Katamba, senior manager, said to be the cause of his colleagues’ expulsion, was sacked.
It is thus a hostile environment in MTN Uganda whose license has not been finalised yet.
