ORAN technology allows telecom operators to lower the cost of network infrastructure by using open, interoperable hardware and software solutions. This can reduce the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) for telecom companies, making expanding coverage in underserved regions across Africa more feasible.
Accenture, in collaboration with MTN, has completed a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) project to test Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) solutions on live networks in South Africa and Nigeria, the group announced on September 12. This initiative aims to enhance customer experience and optimize network costs across the African continent.
“This project provided us with an opportunity to share our experience with MTN through the Rakuten communications platform, and to jointly create the next-generation network that will set new standards for future mobile communications in South Africa and across the continent,” said Nitesh Marcel Singh, Managing Director for Communications, Media & Technology Lead Africa(CMT) at Accenture South Africa.
The PoC included both a live network test and a lab trial at MTN South Africa’s facility in Johannesburg. It marks a significant advancement in using ORAN technology to innovate and drive efficiency in network infrastructure.
ORAN provides a flexible and scalable approach to building and managing network services, offering Communication Service Providers (CSPs) an opportunity to address high mobile traffic, competition, and cost reduction.
This success marks an important step in shaping the future of mobile communications in Africa, emphasizing cost-effective, flexible, and customer-centric network solutions. The project underscores ORAN's potential to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership while promoting cloud-native deployments with increased flexibility and scalability.
ORAN is gaining traction in Africa, driven by the need for flexible, cost-effective, and innovative wireless communication networks. According to DataIntelo’s ORAN Market Outlook 2032, the global ORAN market is projected to grow from USD 2.78 billion in 2023 to USD 26.93 billion by 2032. Africa is part of this growth, with increasing demand for advanced wireless networks.
The U.S. International Trade Organisation highlights South Africa as a leader in ORAN adoption on the continent. ORAN offers significant advantages for mobile operators, including reduced power consumption, lower emissions, and vendor diversity. It is particularly beneficial for 5G deployment, supporting applications like smart cities and the Internet of Things (IoT).
