(Ecofin Agency) - On November 14, 2018, the South African public Internet access provider Broadband Infraco signed a partnership agreement with Angola Cables, the Angolan supplier of optical fiber connection.
The agreement plans for the interconnection of more than 14,960 km long South African terrestrial network of optical fiber to Angolan international submarine cables.
During the signature at the AfricaCom 2018, António Nunes (photo), CEO of Angola Cables, declared that this partnership would facilitate internet connection in Africa.
"With our international connectivity and reach through our submarine networks and the expansive terrestrial network of Broadband Infraco, there is a genuine opportunity for us to collectively fast-track connectivity on the continent […]. The very real possibility now exists to connect Brazil and South Africa to the other BRICS nations of Russia, India, and China through a high speed, low latency connection […]. Such a connection together with our robust network will accelerate international co-operation on multiple levels, promote economic development and fast-track projects that will enable new opportunities for digital content exchange across the region", he said.
Apart from helping Broadband Infraco meet its clients’ demand, the additional data capacities provided thanks to the agreement will help the South African firm fulfill its commitment of providing high-quality internet to the "Square Kilometer Array" (SKA)’s project antenna in the rainbow nation.
Scientists working on the project, the world’s largest radio telescope, can thus easily share data they gather with other entities.
