In Togo, 200km of fiber optic planned under the government’s e-government project has been laid in Lomé, the capital. According to republicoftogo.com who revealed the news, the network should be operational by the end of the year and should connect 500 administrative sites (ministries, public agencies, airport, hospitals, universities, etc.).
Togo’s e-government project was launched on March 10, 2016. Works for the installation of the infrastructure were undertaken by Huawei and cost around $25 million which were provided by Exim Bank China. By connecting public administrations to the fiber optic, Togo would make public services more efficient. This would in turn impact the country’s social and economic development. Administrative procedures and other demands from companies, individuals, etc., will in fact be processed faster.
Shi Weiliang, vice president of Huawei for Africa, while noting that “Togo is connected to only one submarine cable, Benin has 2, Ghana 6 and Nigeria 10,” advised the country to increase its Internet capacities by connecting to a new fiber optic cable. This would help it satisfy its population’s demand for high-speed internet, which is growing rapidly.
