Africa is making significant strides in advancing its space technology landscape, marking a new era of innovation, connectivity, and collaboration across the continent. With growing investments, expanding satellite capabilities, and a surge in local talent, Africa is positioning itself as a rising force in the global space economy.
Egypt-based satellite operator NILESAT and the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Marketing Service Contract. The MoU, announced April 23, will establish a strategic and forward-looking partnership.
“This partnership signifies a strategic alignment of our shared goals to drive innovation, knowledge exchange, and the advancement of satellite services across the region,” said Mr. Hesham Sallam, Chief Commercial Officer of NILESAT. “Together, we aim to deliver enhanced connectivity and foster capacity building in the space sector.”
The agreement, signed by Mr. Hesham Sallam and Mr. Timothy Ashong, Director General of RASCOM, lays the groundwork for enhanced collaboration in key areas, including satellite capacity sales, training, innovation, and research. The two organizations will jointly work to share platforms, applications, and satellite infrastructure to foster growth and accessibility in the space sector across Africa and the Middle East.
Echoing this vision, Mr. Ashong stated, “RASCOM is excited to partner with NILESAT in this important initiative. By combining our strengths and resources, we look forward to delivering impactful solutions and expanding access to space-based technologies.”
Despite ongoing efforts, a substantial portion of Africa's population remains unconnected. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), only 37% of Africa's population had internet connectivity as of 2023. Satellite technology offers a viable solution to this challenge, especially in remote and underserved areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking. By leveraging satellite communications, the NILESAT-RASCOM partnership aims to extend internet access, promoting digital inclusion and economic growth.
The MoU highlights both organizations' commitment to technological collaboration and regional integration, with a focus on supporting sustainable development goals through the advancement of space-based services and digital connectivity.
