Burkina Faso, in view of the rapid technology development and new uses, has decided to strengthen the judicial framework of its telecommunications sector.
In that regard, on October 25, 2018, the ministerial council approved a decree modifying the November 27, 2008 law regulating networks and electronic communication services.
The aim of this amendment, which will soon be transmitted to the national assembly for final approval and enactment, is to not only improve the population’s access to telecom services via development of telecommunications infrastructures but also protect the sector's gain practices that can affect its security and development.
The telecommunications sector in Burkina Faso, with three operators namely Onatel, Telecel, and Orange Airtel, had 16,877,201 subscribers to mobile telephony according to figures published by ARCEP, the regulator in Q2, 2017. During the period under review, the data segment had 4,315,287 consumers.
